Watercoloured Telephone Box Card

Stamp the iconic telephone box design and add subtle watercolour shading around it to create dimension. This technique uses minimal colour to enhance the stamped image without overwhelming the design.

Step by step

1. Stamp the telephone box design onto white card stock using black ink. ▶ watch 32:15
2. Prepare a grey or muted ink colour on a palette or mat. ▶ watch 32:45
3. Dilute the grey ink slightly with water using a brush. ▶ watch 33:00
4. Paint a subtle shadow around the telephone box outline to create a halo effect. ▶ watch 33:15
5. Allow the watercolour to dry, noting that colours will dry back approximately 20% lighter. ▶ watch 33:45
6. Optional: add a small amount of colour to the flag or other design elements using the same technique. ▶ watch 34:15
7. If detail is lost under the watercolour, use a gel pen to redraw lines and restore definition once dry. ▶ watch 34:45
8. Mount the finished panel onto a card blank. ▶ watch 35:15

Tips from the show

• Don't be afraid to apply colour; it will dry back lighter than it appears when wet.
• If you lose detail under watercolour, wait until it's completely dry and use a gel pen to restore lines.
• The cross-hatching on the stamp indicates where you might want to add extra colour for depth.
