Sunset Over Water Card with Blended Horizon

Create a tropical sunset scene by blending warm colours (yellow, orange, pink) across the top half of the card to represent a sunset sky, then add a water horizon line and optional bird stamp to complete the landscape.

Step by step

1. Place your circular stencil on the card to mask the area where your sun will be. ▶ watch 39:45
2. Apply yellow ink to the stencil, tapping it off first to control the amount of colour. ▶ watch 40:00
3. Blend orange ink into the yellow, working from the stencil onto the paper for a gradient effect. ▶ watch 40:30
4. Add pink or red ink to the centre to create depth and warmth in the sunset. ▶ watch 41:00
5. Remove the stencil and use a clean, damp brush to soften the colour transitions. ▶ watch 42:00
6. Draw a horizon line across the card using ink on the stencil to separate sky from water. ▶ watch 42:30
7. Add water texture by stippling white ink across the lower half to suggest ripples and reflections. ▶ watch 43:00
8. Optional: stamp a bird or other design element to complete the scene. ▶ watch 48:00

Tips from the show

• Start with a major idea, such as a sunset, but be prepared to adapt as you work; the final card often differs from your initial plan.
• Keep it simple; sometimes a little colour and water texture is all you need for an effective landscape.
