Painted Leaf Study on Watercolour Card

Learn the fundamental toe-belly-toe brush technique by painting simple leaves on watercolour cardstock. This foundational skill demonstrates how to create varied leaf shapes and builds confidence for more complex floral designs.

Step by step

1. Mix gold confetti ink with water to achieve a medium consistency. ▶ watch 30:15
2. Load your watercolour brush and position it on the tip (toe) of the bristles. ▶ watch 30:30
3. Press the full belly of the brush onto the cardstock to create the widest part of the leaf. ▶ watch 30:45
4. Lift the brush back to the tip (toe) to taper the leaf point. ▶ watch 31:00
5. Repeat the toe-belly-toe motion to create multiple leaves of varying sizes and directions. ▶ watch 31:15

Tips from the show

• Start with leaves as they are the easiest shapes to master before progressing to flowers.
• Rotate your artwork as you paint to vary the direction of the leaves naturally.
• Once you gain confidence with this basic technique, you can build on it to create more complex floral designs.
