Stella Lady Card with Layering Stencils and Patterned Paper

A project from our live show THE BRAND NEW LAUNCH - Join Toni in her UK Studios - Broadcast 17th July 2026 · 17/07/2026 · watch it from 1:14:00

Create a striking fashion illustration card featuring the Stella lady figure using layered stencil techniques and patterned paper piecing. This multi-step project builds dimension through five numbered stencils inked in coordinating colours, then topped with the stamped figure and embellished with patterned fabric details to create a sophisticated, three-dimensional effect.

Step by step

  1. Lay out your five numbered stencils in order, checking you can see the numbers facing you (not reversed on the back). ▶ watch 1:17:45
  2. Position stencil number one in the top corner of your card blank, aligning it with the edge rather than using the heart registration marks. ▶ watch 1:18:00
  3. Apply a light shade of teal ink through stencil one using a brush, pressing gently. ▶ watch 1:19:00
  4. Remove stencil one and position stencil two directly beside it, pressing the same ink pad slightly harder. ▶ watch 1:19:30
  5. Continue with stencils three, four and five, pressing progressively harder and changing to a red or orange shade for the interior jacket detail on stencil four. ▶ watch 1:20:15
  6. Stamp the Stella figure in black ink on top of the completed stencil layers, positioning her so her chin sits in the neck of the roll neck and her arms align with the layered shapes. ▶ watch 1:22:30
  7. Stamp the Stella figure again in black ink onto a patterned paper from the Couture Crosswalks collection. ▶ watch 1:28:00
  8. Cut out the jacket and trousers sections from the patterned paper piece, carefully cutting around the hands to keep them white. ▶ watch 1:28:45
  9. Stamp the Stella figure a third time onto white card stock to create the inner torso/jumper piece. ▶ watch 1:37:00
  10. Cut out just the torso section from the white stamped piece. ▶ watch 1:38:30
  11. Layer and glue the patterned jacket and trousers piece onto the stencilled base, then layer the white torso piece on top to create the three-dimensional paper-pieced effect. ▶ watch 1:39:30
