A project from our live show CREATE TOGETHER CLUB CHAPTER 3 - ITEM 2 - SHOW 1 - Broadcast 31St Oct 23 · 31/10/2023 · watch it from 11:45

Create a stunning three-dimensional sunflower using an embossing folder by fussy cutting and layering three embossed pieces, then painting them in muted sunflower tones with watercolour to add depth and shadow. The result is a beautifully dimensional flower card with incredible detail and visual interest.

Step by step

  1. Trim three pieces of white card to approximately the same size as your embossing folder (5x7). ▶ watch 11:45
  2. Ink both sides of your embossing folder with brown oxide ink, ensuring you get into all the creases for maximum detail. ▶ watch 13:45
  3. Run the first piece of white card through your embossing machine with the inked folder to create the debossed side. ▶ watch 14:30
  4. Re-ink the folder and run the second piece of card through to create another embossed/debossed piece. ▶ watch 16:00
  5. Re-ink the folder one final time and run the third piece of card through the embossing machine. ▶ watch 16:45
  6. Fussy cut the first piece completely around the flower outline to use as your base layer. ▶ watch 20:00
  7. Fussy cut the second piece with more detail, cutting away some of the inner petals and leaves to create a decoupage effect with visible layers. ▶ watch 23:00
  8. Fussy cut the third piece with even more detail removed, leaving only select petals and the centre visible. ▶ watch 25:15
  9. Paint the first (base) layer with watercolour, starting from the top with orange and yellow, blending down to brown in the centre, keeping it muted in tone. ▶ watch 27:30
  10. Paint the second layer with darker brown and orange tones, adding shadows underneath petals to create the illusion of depth. ▶ watch 30:00
  11. Paint the third (top) layer with the darkest brown tones, focusing on creating shadows and dimension where petals overlap. ▶ watch 32:00
  12. Add white ink to the centre using a sponge or ink pad to bring back highlight and detail to the flower centre. ▶ watch 36:00
  13. Add a touch of gold confetti ink to the centre of the flower to catch the light and add sparkle. ▶ watch 40:00
  14. Use a white gel pen to re-define any lost detail lines and bring back definition to the petals. ▶ watch 41:15
  15. Re-ink your embossing folder and run the painted flower through the embossing machine again to push detail back into the creases and enhance dimension. ▶ watch 42:00
  16. Layer the three painted and cut pieces together using foam pads or adhesive, starting with the base layer, then the middle layer, then the top layer. ▶ watch 44:00
