Wooden Panel Distressed Flower Card

A project from our live show Create Together Club - 5 Days of Creativity - Broadcast Wednesday 12TH Feb 2025 · 12/02/2025 · watch it from 11:00

Create a rustic card featuring a wooden fence-like panel effect on the front with a distressed, watercoloured flower stamped and stencilled on top. The layered wood strips create dimension whilst the flower is aged with water and white ink to give a weathered, coastal aesthetic.

Step by step

  1. Cut a side-folding card blank in half and score it to create a top-folding note card, then tape the cut piece inside to hide the hinge. ▶ watch 11:30
  2. Cut the front of your card blank into 1-inch strips, leaving a small piece at the top intact. ▶ watch 13:45
  3. Cut white card stock into two pieces and cut them in half to create strips for your wooden panel effect. ▶ watch 15:00
  4. Arrange the cut strips back onto the card front with gaps between them to create a wicker fence or wooden panel look, spacing them unevenly for a natural wood effect. ▶ watch 15:30
  5. Glue a long strip of white card horizontally across the back of all the vertical strips to connect them together. ▶ watch 17:30
  6. Cut your wood-grain patterned paper to size and layer it behind the wooden panel strips. ▶ watch 19:00
  7. Use the layering stencil system: apply ink through stencil number one with a brush, then swap brushes and colours for stencils two, three, four and five to build up the flower with watercolour effect. ▶ watch 27:45
  8. Stamp the flower outline using a black ink pad and the coordinating stamp to add detail and definition. ▶ watch 35:15
  9. Die-cut the stamped and stencilled flower using your die-cutting machine. ▶ watch 38:30
  10. Activate the ink on the flower by spritzing it with water, then mop up with tissue to create a distressed, aged effect. ▶ watch 40:00
  11. Brush white ink around the edges of the flower to create highlights and enhance the weathered appearance. ▶ watch 42:15
  12. Swipe a dark ink pad across the flower in one direction to add a brushed wood effect and further distress it. ▶ watch 44:00
  13. Add white gel pen highlights along the flower lines to bring back detail if needed. ▶ watch 45:00
  14. Mount the flower onto white card, then layer onto your wooden panel card front using foam pads for dimension. ▶ watch 52:00
  15. Stamp your sentiment onto white card, add ink blending to the edges, then mount onto the card front. ▶ watch 56:00
  16. Splatter white acrylic paint across the finished card using a wet brush to add final distressed texture, then allow to air dry naturally. ▶ watch 59:00
