Teal and Gold Embossed Lantern Shaker Card

A project from our live show Catch Up on the Friday Frenzy - Half Price Event on Selected Christmas Collections - Catchup Broadcast 15TH Oct 21 · 15/10/2021 · watch it from 23:00

Create a stunning shaker card featuring a blurred watercolour-effect background with a lantern stamp, finished with heat-embossed gold detailing and a window aperture filled with sequins. The layered inking technique creates a soft, artistic backdrop that contrasts beautifully with the crisp embossed focal point.

Step by step

  1. Start with a square piece of craft-coloured cardstock and place a lantern stamp in the centre, holding it in place with a magnet. ▶ watch 23:00
  2. Apply dye-based ink (blue) directly onto the cardstock around the stamp, then spray the card with water to create a blurred effect. ▶ watch 24:15
  3. Stamp the lantern into the wet ink and water, pressing down firmly, then lift the stamp away to reveal the soft, blurred impression. ▶ watch 24:45
  4. Mop up excess water with a paper towel to remove dampness, then apply oxide ink (green) to the stamp and spray the stamp itself with water this time. ▶ watch 25:30
  5. Stamp the lantern again onto the card to add another layer of colour and texture, creating depth in the background. ▶ watch 26:15
  6. Once the card is dry, use an anti-static bag and apply sticky embossing ink over the lantern stamp impression. ▶ watch 26:45
  7. Stamp the lantern twice more using the sticky ink pad to ensure all intricate details are covered with embossing ink. ▶ watch 31:15
  8. Dust the embossing ink generously with Midas Touch embossing powder (gold), ensuring complete coverage of the stamped design. ▶ watch 31:45
  9. Heat set the embossing powder with a heat gun until the powder melts and becomes shiny and raised. ▶ watch 32:45
  10. Cut out the centre circle of the lantern design carefully using scissors, following the line of the design to create an aperture window. ▶ watch 35:15
  11. Adhere a piece of acetate to the back of the card using foam pads around the window edge, ensuring no gaps so pieces don't fall through. ▶ watch 37:00
  12. Stamp a sentiment from the same stamp set onto black cardstock and heat emboss it with Mermaid Tails embossing powder (teal). ▶ watch 38:30
  13. Glue the embossed sentiment piece to the back of the acetate window so it shows through the aperture. ▶ watch 39:45
  14. Add foam pads around the entire back of the window frame to create a shaker pocket. ▶ watch 42:45
  15. Pour teal and silver sequins into the shaker pocket, spreading them evenly to avoid lumps in the middle of the card. ▶ watch 45:00
  16. Adhere the shaker card to a card blank base, then add clear iridescent sparkles around the edge using glitter glue for extra embellishment. ▶ watch 46:45
