Teal and Gold Embossed Lantern Shaker Card

A project from our live show Catch Up on the Friday Frenzy - Half Price Event on Selected Christmas Collections - Catchup Broadcast 15TH Oct 21 · 15/10/2021

Create a stunning shaker card featuring a blurred watercolour-effect background with a lantern stamp, finished with heat-embossed gold detailing and a window aperture filled with sequins. The layered inking technique creates a soft, artistic backdrop that contrasts beautifully with the crisp embossed focal point.

  1. 1

Start with a square piece of craft-coloured cardstock and place a lantern stamp in the centre, holding it in place with a magnet.

    ▶ watch this step 23:00
  2. 2

Apply dye-based ink (blue) directly onto the cardstock around the stamp, then spray the card with water to create a blurred effect.

    ▶ watch this step 24:15
  3. 3

Stamp the lantern into the wet ink and water, pressing down firmly, then lift the stamp away to reveal the soft, blurred impression.

    ▶ watch this step 24:45
  4. 4

Mop up excess water with a paper towel to remove dampness, then apply oxide ink (green) to the stamp and spray the stamp itself with water this time.

    ▶ watch this step 25:30
  5. 5

Stamp the lantern again onto the card to add another layer of colour and texture, creating depth in the background.

    ▶ watch this step 26:15
  6. 6

Once the card is dry, use an anti-static bag and apply sticky embossing ink over the lantern stamp impression.

    ▶ watch this step 26:45
  7. 7

Stamp the lantern twice more using the sticky ink pad to ensure all intricate details are covered with embossing ink.

    ▶ watch this step 31:15
  8. 8

Dust the embossing ink generously with Midas Touch embossing powder (gold), ensuring complete coverage of the stamped design.

    ▶ watch this step 31:45
  9. 9

Heat set the embossing powder with a heat gun until the powder melts and becomes shiny and raised.

    ▶ watch this step 32:45
  10. 10

Cut out the centre circle of the lantern design carefully using scissors, following the line of the design to create an aperture window.

    ▶ watch this step 35:15
  11. 11

Adhere a piece of acetate to the back of the card using foam pads around the window edge, ensuring no gaps so pieces don't fall through.

    ▶ watch this step 37:00
  12. 12

Stamp a sentiment from the same stamp set onto black cardstock and heat emboss it with Mermaid Tails embossing powder (teal).

    ▶ watch this step 38:30
  13. 13

Glue the embossed sentiment piece to the back of the acetate window so it shows through the aperture.

    ▶ watch this step 39:45
  14. 14

Add foam pads around the entire back of the window frame to create a shaker pocket.

    ▶ watch this step 42:45
  15. 15

Pour teal and silver sequins into the shaker pocket, spreading them evenly to avoid lumps in the middle of the card.

    ▶ watch this step 45:00
  16. 16

Adhere the shaker card to a card blank base, then add clear iridescent sparkles around the edge using glitter glue for extra embellishment.

    ▶ watch this step 46:45
