Watercolour Stencil Floral Card with Layered Colour

A project from our live show CATCH UP with Toni for a FRIDAY LAUNCH in the HTCN studio broadcast 12th Nov 21 · 12/11/2021 · watch it from 22:45

Create a beautiful hand-painted watercolour card using a laminated stencil to build up layers of colour. The stencil technique creates a realistic, artistic look with soft colour bleeding and blended tones that look professionally painted.

Step by step

  1. Place your laminated stencil onto watercolour cardstock, positioning it where you want your design. ▶ watch 22:45
  2. Load your brush with watercolour paint and brush colour through the stencil openings, starting with a light shade like pink. ▶ watch 23:30
  3. Add a second colour, such as green, through different areas of the stencil, allowing colours to blend naturally. ▶ watch 24:00
  4. Spray the painted area lightly with water to encourage the watercolour to bleed and disperse, creating soft edges. ▶ watch 25:45
  5. Allow the paint to dry slightly, then carefully lift the stencil away to reveal the design. ▶ watch 26:30
  6. Reposition the stencil over the dried design and add a third colour layer to build depth and bring back the stencil outline. ▶ watch 27:30
  7. Spray again with water to create additional colour blending and soft dispersal effects. ▶ watch 28:45
  8. Once dry, use a white gel pen to add highlights and details to the flower centres and leaf outlines. ▶ watch 31:00
  9. Use a black fine-liner pen to add definition lines and spots within the design for extra interest. ▶ watch 32:45
  10. Mount the finished stencilled piece onto a card base, positioning a stamped sentiment like 'love' to overlap the design. ▶ watch 36:00
