Dramatic Inked Background Card with Drip Effect

A moody, artistic card created by building up layers of colour directly on the stamp using alcohol markers and ink pads, then stamping onto cardstock. The technique creates a dramatic, painterly effect with controlled drips and splatters that frame the central image.

Step by step

1. Mix purple, blue and red alcohol markers together on a palette or directly on the stamp. ▶ watch 31:45
2. Use a stippling brush (dotting motion) to apply the mixed colours over the top of the stamp, building up colour rather than blending smoothly. ▶ watch 32:00
3. Dip the lid of a confetti ink pad into the ink and drip it off the sides of the stamp to create a halo effect around the edges. ▶ watch 32:15
4. Tap confetti ink over the top of the dripped ink to add additional colour layers. ▶ watch 32:30
5. Stamp the prepared stamp onto cardstock, pressing firmly to transfer all the layered colours. ▶ watch 32:45
6. Allow the ink to dry completely. ▶ watch 33:00
7. Add a warm vignette around the edges using the same ink colours to tie the design together. ▶ watch 33:15
8. Mount the finished piece onto white cardstock and then onto craft card for the final card. ▶ watch 33:30

Tips from the show

• Use a stippling brush rather than blending to create a buildup of colour that looks artistic and intentional rather than soft and blended.
• Don't worry about the drips being perfect; they add to the dramatic, artistic quality of the finished card.
• Building confidence to take techniques to the next level is important; don't hold back from adding extra layers and details.
