Mixed Media MDF Heart with Glitter Paste and Embellishments

A decorative MDF heart embellished with layered glitter paste, stencilled stripes, and coordinating wooden flower and leaf elements. This mixed media piece showcases how to combine multiple techniques and products to create a finished home décor item.

Step by step

1. Paint your large MDF heart with a white background using acrylic paint, or leave it unprimed if preferred. ▶ watch 39:45
2. Apply icing ink sprays in various colours across the heart to add a colourful base layer. ▶ watch 40:00
3. Allow the sprayed base to dry, then apply heat if needed to set the colours. ▶ watch 40:15
4. Position your striped stencil on the heart without taping it down if you prefer a freehand approach. ▶ watch 41:15
5. Apply glitter paste through the stencil using a palette knife, using small pea-sized amounts and allowing the paste to hold the stencil in place. ▶ watch 41:30
6. Layer additional colours of glitter paste, such as purple mixed with pink and green, allowing them to blend together naturally. ▶ watch 41:45
7. Remove the stencil and allow the glitter paste to dry. ▶ watch 42:00
8. Paint the wooden embellishments (leaves, flowers, and sentiment pieces) using gossip sparkle pens to add shine and colour. ▶ watch 43:00
9. Arrange your painted wooden elements on the heart, then adhere them using wet glue or a glue gun. ▶ watch 45:30
10. Allow all adhesive to dry completely to finish your mixed media piece. ▶ watch 46:00

Tips from the show

• You do not need to prime MDF before applying glitter paste, acrylic paint, or other mediums—you can go straight onto the wood.
• When applying glitter paste freehand through a stencil, the paste itself will hold the stencil down, so you don't need to worry about it moving.
• This MDF collection accepts many different mediums including acrylic paint, gossip sparkle pens, icing sprays, and glitter paste, giving you lots of creative options.
